Dark wood, bronze hardware, neutral tones and rectilinear lines—this sophisticated combination has shaped minimalist interiors as we know them. It’s the signature design scheme of Christian Liaigre and his eponymous brand, and it is a look that has endured for nearly 40 years since the founding of the interior architecture and furniture company in 1985. A visit to Elena Salmistraro’s colourful studio feels akin to travelling into a parallel world full of wonder and whimsy—from anthropomorphic figures to vases in the shapes of fantastic beasts, her oeuvre encompasses a vibrant array of ceramics, furniture and accessories. Her distinctive aesthetic has made her highly sought-after, given her work as an artist, a curator and as a product designer. “Seeing is believing”, or so the adage goes. The playful work of Indonesian artist and printmaker Irfan Hendrian shakes up your perception of what you think you see. These include “wooden” blocks made from a stack of paper digitally printed with woodgrain-effect patterns as well as stone-like columns and wood-like trunks crafted using bookbinding techniques. This home is located in Barcelona’s Poblenou neighbourhood, a former factory district that has seen an urban revival in the past two decades. Once known as the “Catalan Manchester”, Poblenou is becoming the creative heart of the city; it’s also celebrated for its proximity to Bogatell Beach and the up-and-coming 22@ technology district, as well as landmarks such as the Barcelona Design Museum and the Agbar Tower. Ever since the advent of the Bilbao effect, cities around the world have strived to recreate the success of the Frank Gehrydesigned Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in Spain. Opened in September, the Odunpazari Modern Museum (OMM) in Eskisehir, Turkey, is the latest contender. Founded by art collector and entrepreneur Erol Tabanca, this museum seeks to showcase modern and contemporary art by local and international artists while creating a cultural centre in the university town in northwestern Turkey. Designed by Kengo Kuma and Associates (KKAA), the museum architecture made reference to the districts ’ history; the Odunpazari district took its name from its origins as a timber trading market and the wooden cantilevered Ottoman-era houses in Turkey. “WE TRY TO DIRECT OUR DESIGN TOWARDS ‘SLOW AESTHETICS’; THIS UNDERSTANDING OF SOMETHING THAT AGES WITH GRACE, THAT GROWS BETTER OVER TIME” At first glance, the worlds of gastronomy and design may seem like odd bedfellows. But for Danish practice Space Copenhagen, it has been a natural fit. Founded in 2005 by Signe Bindslev Henriksen and Peter Bundgaard Rützou, the studio is the creative mastermind behind the interiors of the first Noma restaurant and 108 Restaurant in Copenhagen, as well as a slew of haute venues in the Danish capital. “What the chefs aim to do is very finely balanced with how we perceive design; there’s a certain honesty, directness of natural materials and resources,” quips Rützou, explaining the intricacies of combining each restaurant’s culinary philosophy with its design concept.…

Like most fathers, thoughts about the future weigh heavily on the mind of architect Roberto Palomba. “When I became a father, I was no longer only thinking about my life,” says Palomba. “I was thinking of what I leave to this world; that changed my perception of responsibility.” This regard for the future extends to his design approach: “My generation grew up with the mistaken thinking that natural resources are unlimited and that is absolutely not true. For Sujono Lim and Molina Hun, each new project is an opportunity to craft a transformative experience through design and space. The co-founders of Sujonohun observe that kitchens may not often become the focal point of an apartment, particularly when one considers the size of modern homes in Singapore. “The kitchen is often at the end or by the side of the main highlight, the living room or dining room,” they explain. Melvin Lau did not start Dewoodscape with an interest in woodwork. In fact, his academic background in accounting and hospitality are worlds away from his current occupation. The Dutch entrepreneur co-founded the firm three years ago with his Indonesian wife, Novia Kiang, after receiving a fortuitous business opportunity with a furniture manufacturer. The company started as a store that sold custom-made furniture using wooden slabs imported from Indonesia. Shortly after, the couple decided to do the treatment and finishing processes in-house to ensure optimal quality of each product; they also recently opened a factory in Indonesia which oversees the wood drying process. So it seemed only natural to have these prized paintings and objets d’art take centre stage in their new home. Home to a family of five, this penthouse apartment is filled with a lifetime’s worth of lovingly curated treasures, which include artworks by celebrated artists such as Salvador Dali, MF Husain, Joan Miro, Pablo Picasso and Yayoi Kusama, as well as paintings by their talented daughter, who is studying art and music abroad. Turning a house into a home is a process that celebrates the unique passions and personalities of its inhabitants. Pairing these characterful nuances with practical style is no easy feat; for a lucky couple, they were able to find their dream collaborators thanks to the help of their friendly neighbours. The homeowners, who run their own business and live with their two children, loved what KGID had done with their neighbour’s home and decided to engage them to design their abode, too. “Architectural trends may come and go, but I want my home to be a protective constant that I can return to,” says Nikki Hunt, principal of Design Intervention. That mantra holds true for her home; its architecture was inspired by colonial black-and-white bungalows, in terms of their casual majesty and their response to the tropical climate, as well as their sense of permanence. When it comes to the interior, however, change is constant. Furniture brand SP01 prides itself on being conceived in Australia, designed by renowned creatives around the world, and produced by leading Italian manufacturers. The four-year-old label, which is Space Furniture’s first in-house brand, has put out six collections to date, working with three different designers to produce hand-finished furniture with classic influences and crafted to the highest standards. SP01 worked with Milan-based Metrica on its first collection of furniture in sculpted and hand-finished solid ash, paired with an extensive range of upholstery textiles. In the Glockenbach district in Munich, Germany, a tranquil forest path leads to the studio of industrial designer Stefan Diez. The former joinery has been transformed into a modern workspace; almost everything in it was built by Diez and his team, together with his father who’s a fourth-generation cabinetmaker. Diez studied in Stuttgart and then worked in Konstantin Grcic’s studio before founding Diez Office in 2008. One of his earliest works, the 404 chair for Thonet, draws from the German brand’s century-long tradition of bentwood production, while creating a contemporary knot-like form. From burnished mirror panels and art murals to ornate chandeliers, the decorative possibilities of glass are almost endless. Led by founder and creative director Florence Ng, Synergraphic is a local studio that specialises in designing, fabricating and installing custom-made interior and architectural glass art. After working in a company that sold glass doors and windows, Ng ventured abroad to learn more about glass fusing and blowing techniques, under the tutelage of American glass artists; she has worked with the medium for over three decades since the firm’s inception in 1986. Prakash Raja, a corporate lawyer and his wife Sharline Suhumaran, a developmental pediatrician, wanted a private sanctuary that could offer them respite from their busy lives. “My ideal home is a space that’s safe, familiar, beautiful and comfortable,” says Sharline. For her husband, home is a place he comes back to unwind, and to spend quality time with his wife and their two young children every day. “It is a place that the kids will enjoy growing up in for at least the next 10 to 15 years,” he says. The bedroom is more than just a space for slumber. It is an intimate haven and a refuge.
