1 FORM: GET IN LINE Sleek and discreet designs were the de rigueur at Euroluce this year—a variety of linear forms were seen in many of the exhibition booths at the lighting fair. From Marset comes High Line, a vertical floor lamp composed of two solid blocks of wood set on a black iron base. Designed by Barcelona designer Josep Lluís Xuclà, the sculptural High Line provides ambient illumination by gently bouncing light off the wall. 1 STYLE: RETRO MOOD A sense of nostalgia was palpable at the 58th edition of the Salone del Mobile furniture fair in Milan. Designing a beautiful space is no easy feat; crafting a holistic interior that’s both liveable and luxurious takes the challenge to a next level. “I think design can be very adventurous and glamorous, but there’s also a very practical side to it,” shares Divya Anthony. “At the end of the day, we’re designing for real people who are going to use that space and see it every day.” That mix of practical knowledge and design flair has led to the success of The I.D. When a great designer passes away, there is a sense of loss but also the feeling of rediscovery. That was certainly the case when Italian designer Alessandro Mendini died in February at the age of 87. Amidst the outpouring of remembrance was a recognition that Mendini’s architecture, furniture design and criticism—adventurous, playful, assertive and syncretic—did so much to shape how we see design today. Along with the Milan-based designers that followed him, Mendini helped shift design from a largely functional, utilitarian discipline to one that served as a vehicle for self-expression. Designers had always been artisans; under Mendini’s influence, they became something close to artists. On a tiny island like Singapore, space is the ultimate luxury. So when the owners approached Prestige Global Designs to create a homely yet luxurious dwelling, the firm had more than a few tricks up their sleeves to realise their dream home. For this project, the team had to incorporate deft design touches to make the most of the 2,519sqft floor area, particularly by playing with light and reflective surfaces. With its imposing Victorian facade, angular lines and its location in one of London’s most exclusive addresses, this home could be deemed a touch intimidating. But while its frontage is demonstrably late 19th century, the interior of the five-storey home is an uplifting mix of contemporary and Art Deco that makes the home feel bright and welcoming.
