Kengo Kuma believes blockbuster architecture has had its day. The Japanese architect, one of the most acclaimed of our time, is convinced that huge skyscrapers and looming concrete complexes will be things of the past within a few years. “We’re entering the era of personalised architecture,” he declares. “The shift is already happening. The first impression one gets of Astrie Ratner’s airy apartment is that there is a lot of white. The next time you’re on a flight to Seoul, keep an eye out for a golden spot before you land at the Incheon International Airport. Visible from the air the distinctive golden circle marks the entrance of the Chroma nightclub at the Paradise City integrated resort in Incheon, South Korea. When the building housing this Parisian apartment was erected in 1905, the Eiffel Tower was less than two decades old and the neighbouring Palais de Chaillot not even a twinkle in its architects’ eye. The latter structure, which dominates the Place du Trocadéro, was only conceived for the 1937 Universal Exhibition, and not completely finished for the event as the workmen had gone on strike. The founder of Dwell Interior Design, whose signature contemporary style ascribes to the philosophy of “less is more”, found himself tasked to design a home inspired by the glitzy lives of reality television stars The Kardashians.
