From the age of six, Daniella Norling remembers accompanying her father on drives around Auckland’s picturesque Herne Bay just so she could study some of her favourite houses. So the design director of Ponsonby’s Trove Interior Design was delighted when she was asked to work her magic on one of the beloved 1920s villas on her childhood wish list. Norling was also no stranger to the villa’s new owners – a well-travelled, professional couple who no longer have children living at home – as she had already completed a five-star boutique hotel on the South Island for them, as well as their previous home on the North Island. Q&A JANE CAROLAN design ambassador for Carpet Court What does your role at Carpet Court entail? Carpet Court approached me to work on tools and content to help take the headache and stress out of making design decisions. We want to ensure the principals of how customers make flooring decisions are looked at holistically and cover everything from colour, desire and need, to practicality and budget. A dam and Alice Sharp were still dating when Adam spied a “For Sale” sign on what is now the top half of the site of their modern concrete three-story family home in Remuera, Auckland. ON SONG MAC is wooing us with another of its spectacular creative collaborations, this time teaming up with Chris Chang; the Shanghai-based designer of fashion label Poesia. CLAIRE KINGAN-JONES Former fashion designer Claire Kingan-Jones has created a relaxed feel in the Auckland home she shares with her husband and teenage sons. The former owner/designer of women’s fashion labels RJC and Kingan-Jones has travelled extensively, particularly in India, Bali and her native South Africa, where she picked up both knick-knacks for her home and a fearless approach to colour. So it was an easy decision for her to work with interior designer and former Republic publicist Fiona McLeod to create a “resort feel” in her Herne Bay home. Belinda Hall’s house in Melbourne, Australia, shows what can be done to live more beautifully within an existing framework of a building. Melbourne’s oldest suburbs were laid out in the boom years of the Victorian era gold rush, when neat quadrants of brick cottages were built, street by street. These streets are now lush and leafy, and the homes in them much sought-after. Houses of this era are most often renovated to retain the gracious front rooms, while demolishing the various additions at the back to erect a modern extension; a ‘white box’, if you will, with lofty ceilings, bright spaces and open-plan living. Manhattan-based interior designer Fawn Galli, has created the perfect getaway from city life in her Brooklyn brownstone. After 15 years living it up as a hard-working party girl in the West Village, a pregnant Galli and her architect husband Julio Salcedo crossed the Brooklyn bridge just over a decade ago to set up home in the family-friendly neighbourhood of Carroll Gardens. They purchased a 760 square metre, turn of the 20th century townhouse, which was painted red inside and was somewhat dark and dreary. Galli immediately set about bringing light into the four-storey home with a quirky design aesthetic she describes as a mix of “70s disco, Alice in Wonderland and modern vintage”. There’s something to be said for the wise, predictive powers of those who forecast trends for a living – evidenced in the decision by Australian fashion designer Vanessa Kortlang to purchase a home in the then largely migrant populated area of South Yarra 27 years ago. The fact this locale has become one of Melbourne’s most soughtafter neighbourhoods is of secondary importance to Kortlang, however, who felt an immediate connection with the old Victorian house. She purchased the small single-fronted weatherboard cottage in 1989. It had been inhabited by the same woman for more than 60 years and it was falling down around her.
