Set in an imaginary “Tropico Italiano”, the Dolce & Gabbana collection continued to have fun with Italian clichés. Spaghetti, pizza and mandolins were points to be shown off, not stereotypes to be demonised. References to Southern Italy were clear to see: the band playing, the lucky horns, the day’s catch, tomatoes, little saint icons, fringes and mirrors made by local craftsmen, widow’s outfits, exvoto offerings and bobbin lace collars. Gaudy sequins, gilding and precious embroidery lived side by side with jute sacks and farm hand uniforms, while t-shirts referenced market-stall fakes. Florals featured in the patterns, appliqués and embellishments. But Italy is also about sport, so the show also included pennants, sweatshirts, polo shirts and Palermo football club kit.
