BORN IN 1885 IN NORA, ILLINOIS, ELBA MAE GHENT, a.k.a. Mamie Francis, grew up in Wisconsin, riding horses and learning to shoot. By age 15, Elba Mae’s parents had divorced, and she was living with her mother who worked as a housekeeper for a farmer near Janesville, Wisconsin. When Pawnee Bill’s Historical Wild West Indian Museum and Encampment Show came to town in 1901, Elba Mae joined the show. She would go on to have a career in performing that lasted nearly 40 years, and she became known for her beauty, skill, and courage.
