“Oak before the ash, we get a splash; ash before the oak, we get a soak” is an old country saying to predict spring weather and, strange to say, it seems to come right. This year seems to be a good example, with the great oaks resplendent in the wonderful soft green of their early flourish. Meanwhile, there is no sign of life in the ash, although perhaps the dieback disease is partly responsible.
Whatever, after some cold nights and sharp frosts at the end of March, much of April was just about perfect for early ducklings here in the south. We have had mild weather, some lovely sunny days and only a few showers here and there, with good insect hatches in the chalkstream nurseries.
