THOUGHTS FROM THE FIELD
Household Cavalry horses, known as Cavalry Blacks, are generally part-bred Irish draughts, chosen for their size, steadfast demeanour and dark bay colouring — the very pattern of a weight-carrying hunter. After their early training, the young horses, or remounts, move to London, where they embark upon their final education before beginning ceremonial duties. Remounts arriving in London are given official names, each starting with the same letter. The following year, the initial letter shifts forward one in the alphabet. When I served in 3 Troop, the Life Guards, our corporal of horse utilised my mania for hunting in picking the monikers for the new additions to our troop lines.
