Latin name: Bolboschoenus maritimus
Common name: Sea club-rush
Other names: Bayonet grass, alkali bulrush, saltmarsh bulrush
How to spot it and where to find it: A quick-growing sedge with golden flower spikes, sea club-rush — as its name suggests — likes water, so can be found next to ponds and in wetlands, estuaries or on the coast. It can also tolerate saltwater so does well in saltmarshes, too. It has triangular stems and serrated, emerald-green leaves. The flowers form on the end of golden-brown ovoid spikelets, followed by shiny tear-shaped fruits, each containing one seed. It spreads by putting out rhizomes, forming into dense stands, and is pollinated by the wind.
