How to spot it and where to find it: Like several wild plants, butterbur produces flowers before its leaves. Growing on a tall reddish-purple spike, the flowers are a pretty shade of pale pink and can last from March through to May. The leaves are roughly heart-shaped with hairy undersides and, by late spring, can measure up to 1m across. Butterbur likes shade and moist soil.
