How to spot it and where to find it: A perennial herb, purple moor grass is found in a wide variety of habitats, though it likes the moisture of open heath, moors, bogs and fens. It is a tolerant plant, however, that can fare just as well on mountain cliffs and grasslands, stony lake margins and open woodland, particularly birch. It forms clumps of basal foliage, with purple flowers held aloft or arching gracefully on slender stalks. The leaves are grey green above and dark green beneath.
