The new rules would cover the European Economic Area, which includes Norway and Switzerland as well as the EU, and would ban the use or possession of lead ammunition within 100 metres of a ‘wetland area’.
This change, which could become part of the EU’s REACH regulations framework, would considerably exceed current UK legislation.
The proposed legislation does not define the term ‘wetland’, however, the majority of EU member states use the definition from the Ramsar convention: ‘areas of marsh, fen, peatland or water, whether natural or artificial, permanent or temporary, with water that is static or flowing, fresh, brackish or salt’.
