Perhaps I am behind the times, but until recently I had never taken seriously the possibility of feeding dogs on a diet rich in insects rather than meat. However, Simon Doherty, the president of the British Veterinary Association, recently told the BBC that some insect-based foods may be better for dogs than steak.
What my spaniels would think of it is another matter but I’m sure insect-based pet foods will appeal to vegetarian pet owners, though I’m not so sure about vegans. Earlier this year a British-based company, Yora, launched an insect-based kibble, claiming it was the world’s most sustainable dog food. Apart from insect grubs, the kibble also contains oats, potato, kale, seaweed and chicory. It looks and smells just like ordinary kibble.
