Of the numerous domesticated breeds descended from the mallard, none can rival the call duck for its cute looks, making it a popular pet. Call ducks have their origins in the Netherlands, where they were selectively bred for their diminutive size and their noise: they seldom stop quacking. They were used to lure their wild cousins into decoys, while their small size meant an equally small appetite, so they were cheap to keep.
