One of our nine native breeds of pony, the New Forest is a familiar sight to anyone who has driven through the New Forest National Park in Hampshire. Around 3,000 ponies range across the forest, though this number drops to 2,000 in winter. Any unshod New Forest mares or geldings can be released into the forest, but there is a strict control on the release of stallions, which must be registered in the New Forest Studbook.
Unlike the Exmoor pony, the New Forest is highly variable, ranging in size from 12hh to 14.2hh. Most are bay, chestnut or grey, but other colours also occur, though piebalds and skewbalds cannot be registered in the studbook.
