“It is essential to ensure that death is instant and painless, to optimise welfare” I have, I suppose, a reasonably comprehensive sporting library, built up over the years. Virtually every aspect of the sport is covered, from finding ground, creating a DIY shoot, rearing game, organising a day’s sport, feeding, vermin control and picking-up but there is never, or seldom, any reference to that most vital aspect of shooting, the humane despatching of a wounded bird or animal, be it a pheasant, duck, pigeon, rabbit or squirrel.
