For a good number of years I have deserted “party” shoots and, when not shooting with my fowling partner, I prefer to “go it alone”. Wildfowling, inland duck shooting, roughshooting, pigeon shooting, pest control… all are undertaken with my sole companion, a large, black Labrador, sharing with me that honour of the passing years: a slightly greying muzzle.
The proverb “He travels fastest who travels alone” applies faithfully to many lone shooters, especially those who do not concentrate on one shoot, but who rent or have permission to shoot over odd farms, marshes or bits of rough country, as I do. There are times when I think what an advantage it would be to have a single roughshoot that I could keeper, look after and walk round in a morning.…
