The 1,400-acre Llanforda Estate sits right on the Welsh border, on the English side in Shropshire. Steeped in history, it can be traced back to the 1500s and was originally owned by the Lloyd family. In the 1600s, a formal garden was developed followed by fishponds, a boating lake and magnificent parkland. The family, keen botanists for many generations, it would appear, developed the gardens and worked in close association with gardens in London, including St. James’s Park. In the 1700s, the original house was rebuilt. The plan was for it to be a rather grand mansion but, in reality, a much smaller property occupied the site. Sadly, this was demolished in 1949 although the walled garden, or part of it, remains.
