Judges don’t want to give zeros
I respond to George Threadgall’s query (April Letters) about receiving a zero in a working test for dropping the dummy.
My response is my own, because, rightly so, as with almost every sport out there, varying judges have priorities, preferences and opinion which may slightly differ to their peers.
Training in a calm, reliable delivery takes time, effort and dedication. It is a very important part of the whole retrieve. Equal to steadiness before sending, locating the dummy, a snappy return, and a delivery to hand, taken from the dog’s mouth.
My opinion, as a judge, is that there is no such thing as the handler ‘accidentally dropping the dummy’. The reality is that the dog let go…
