Pop of Neutral: I probably sew because my mom sewed, but honestly, I think I have a natural affinity for putting things together. Early on, I “helped” my mom, and I made some self-drafted dresses for my Troll dolls. Then as a teen, I ventured out and began to work with patterns on my own. Trim straight seams that are pressed open in order to reduce bulk inside the garment. Trim both seam allowances together when working with lightweight fabric (1). Trim each seam allowance independently when working with heavyweight fabrics to ensure ease and accuracy. SUPPLIES • ¼ yard tulle fabric • 1 yard ⅓” ribbon PREPARE Cut a 6” × 45” rectangle of tulle fabric. Using a rotary cutter and ruler works best. Fold the tulle in half lengthwise and press. tip Yes, you can press tulle fabric. Turn your iron to a cool setting and use a pressing cloth. Unfold the tulle and cut 1½” from the top of the tulle (1). Fold the tulle in half along the original pressed line. The top layer of tulle is now shorter than the bottom half. CONSTRUCT To pleat the tulle, measure and mark ½” pleats around the folded edge of the tulle. Pin the pleats and stitch in place. TAKE A TRIP TO YOUR LOCAL THRIFT STORE; THIS PROJECT IS THE PERFECT OPPORTUNITY TO UPCYCLE A THRIFT STORE FIND. SUPPLIES • Trench coat • Seam ripper • Acrylic ruler • Iron PREPARE Using a seam ripper, remove the sleeves from the jacket. If the jacket is lined, remove both the main and lining sleeve pieces. Remove the sleeve cuffs and any additional details from each sleeve. Cut the sleeve open along the underarm seam. Working on a flat surface, find the grainline of the sleeve and position the sleeve with the grainline vertical. Using a clear acrylic ruler, position the ruler at a 45° angle from the grainline. Cut strips of sleeve fabric that are 2¼” wide (1). Between the two sleeves, cut enough strips to finish the armholes.…
