FISHING AND TRAVEL Åland is an autonomous region of Finland. Comprising around 6,700 islands, this Swedish-speaking archipelago is in the Baltic Sea at the entrance to the Gulf of Bothnia. The capital, Mariehamn, on the main island of Fasta Åland, is known for its beaches and streets lined with pretty 19th-century wooden townhouses.
Västerhamn, the town’s western port, links Åland with Estonia, Sweden and mainland Finland. It is 1,580 km2 in size and has a population of 30,129.
Travel
To get to Åland you can fly to Stockholm and get an internal flight to the only airport on the island at Mariehamn, which takes 25 minutes. There are two flights a day. There are also ferries from western Sweden.
