NEWS LINES California Cracks Down on Poachers Law-enforcement officials in California have embraced a statewide ticketing system aimed at stopping poachers and anglers who illegally catch bass, yellowtail, and other types of fish and marine life within marine protected areas (MPAs). California’s continued push to police its network of MPAs, which covers some 5,200 square miles, about 16 percent of the state’s coastal waters, is cause for ongoing controversy. Patrolling and the enforcement of regulations have been pretty uneven, and many anglers joke that MPA stands for marine poaching area. Our guide shut off the motor and barely had time to climb atop the poling platform when he announced, “Sabalo, sabalo!” And as if conjured by magic, a school of tarpon materialized 75 feet off the bow. We couldn’t ask for a better welcoming committee. By the time I made the cast, a dozen 15-pounders cruised in unison a scant 50 feet from the boat. Nontargeted species and excess catch should be tallied in total catch numbers. It is a number that I find staggering and hard to understand. In the United States, food waste is estimated at between 30 and 40 percent of the food supply. This estimate is based on analysis from the USDA’s Economic Research Service of 31 percent food loss at the retail and consumer levels, which corresponds to approximately 133 billion pounds or $161 billion worth of food in 2010 dollars. An accurate sea-surfacetemperature readout lets you find important temp breaks. We had been trolling for hours without a single tuna strike when I glanced at the sea-surface temperature (SST) readout. I noticed the temp was ticking downward about a tenth of a degree every 200 to 300 feet on an easterly course, resulting in a temperature swing of 1.5 degrees over a span of a quarter mile. On the cooler side of the break, I saw numerous schools of bait on the fish finder, as opposed to marking virtually nothing on the warmer side. I shifted course to troll along the cool side of the break and hooked a tuna every 5 to 15 minutes for the next hour. That’s a prime example of how anglers benefit by monitoring SST.…
