Mullet are easily caught with a cast net along shallow shorelines, in residential canals, or in marinas and boat basins. They are available year-round along both Florida coasts, but two migrations make mullet most abundant in spring and fall. Note: Best size for tarpon is 7 to 9 inches, except during fall, when 10- to 12-inchers are preferred.
Spring through fall, pilchards abound along both Florida coasts and herring mostly gulfside. Both gather on shallow grass flats, in canal mouths and boat basins, around channel markers, buoys, inlets, passes and beaches. They respond well to chum and can be caught with a cast net, sabiki or gold-hook rig. Note: Best size for tarpon is 4 inches and up.
