This year, the iconic National Arts Festival turns 50. Collectively created by thousands of artists, performers, producers, actors, directors, stagehands, and more, this year's festival will look back at the history of the arts community in South Africa and where it may be headed in the future.
The Festival has deep roots in Makhanda (formerly Grahamstown) in the Eastern Cape. The NAF was a critical space for protest during apartheid; has hosted numerous groundbreaking artists; survived Covid by going digital; and back to live again, and is evolving and shaping the arts for its 50th anniversary.
