Did you have any formal training? I’ve been drawing from the time I could hold a pencil at age two, but growing up in Vanderbijlpark there were no art classes at the school I attended. When I went to Rhodes University to study fine art, they asked for my portfolio and I said I didn’t have one; I had come to learn. How did you develop your unique style? From Rhodes I went on to do a post-graduate year at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London. EXPERT TIPS Claire Bond, Plascon Paint Effects specialist, has these tips for painting wooden floors: Woods like oak, pine and beech, that have an open grain, can take limewashing. However, the wood must be raw and unpainted. You either have to strip the floor, or sand it down thoroughly with extra-coarse sandpaper. To make the glaze, mix 70% Wall & All (colour) and 30% water to a creamy consistency. You can make it more concentrated if you want to cover more of the wood grain or less concentrated to expose more. Experiment on pieces of scrap wood. Paint the wood, and while it’s wet, use a dry brush or lint-free mutton cloth to gently remove some of the paint mix. Then, depending on the effect you want, add more water…

The house A four-bedroom, three-bathroom home with an open-plan living area, dining room, scullery, laundry, wraparound veranda and TV lounge as well as a separate guest suite. TRUE BLUE “To pick up the colour of the berry-topped profiteroles, I chose a blue mixing bowl instead of a traditional vase,” says Phern Calvert of SilvaSale Catering and Events. In this she combined classic green hydrangeas, Cape fynbos and veronicas. EXPERT ADVICE Rose guru Ludwig Taschner of Ludwig’s Roses has these tips for growing climbing roses: For an effect like this, plant repeat-flowering climbing roses such as ‘Compassion’, ‘Golden Showers’, ‘Pink Cloud’, ‘Cherry Garland’, ‘Climbing Iceberg’ and ‘Crème Caramel’ which grow up to 5m high. Other good climbers are ‘Blossom Magic’, ‘Edgar Degas’ and ‘Clair Matin’. In smaller gardens, try miniature Midinette climbers which reach a height of 2–3m and don’t need a robust support. Good soil preparation is essential. Plant climbers at least 30cm away from walls and solid fences in soil enriched with compost or Ludwig’s growing mix and peanut shells. Use the largest containers you can find. They should be at least 70cm in diameter and 70cm high. Ensure they have good drainage holes. Place the pot in position before planting as it will be too heavy to move afterwards. Roses require a minimum of six hours sunlight a day, preferably morning sun. Next, position a layer of bidim or shade netting on the bottom of the pot to prevent the holes from becoming blocked. Add a layer of pebbles and river sand to ensure good drainage. Use the very best potting soil available and mix in 2–3 spadefuls of Ludwig’s Rose Planting Mix which has all the essential nutrients for plants in containers. Everyone needs a break from the pressures of everyday life. Look at ways to make your garden a relaxing retreat, a place to escape to. Start by including fragrant flowers, climbers and shrubs as well as those that release a scent when brushed past or stepped on. Then plant softly coloured perennials that appeal to the eye and those with delicately textured foliage. FIND OF THE MONTH Can you tell me more about this pair of vases/decanters and their value? They were given to me by friends who inherited them from their mother and grandmother. I have no idea of their age. One has a chip on the lip and the lids have very small chips on one or two corners. Otherwise they’re in excellent condition. Originating in Africa, Asia and the Americas, and part of the foxglove (Scrophulariaceae) family, there are over 100 species of buddleja (also spelt buddleia) including seven indigenous species. Named after the Rev. Adam Buddle, a 17th-century English botanist, they’ve become favourites in gardens around the world. It’s very disheartening when lovingly tended vegetables and herbs die because of extreme heat and lack of water. However, you can reduce the chances of this happening by using a few simple techniques. CREATE HEALTHY SOIL Water does more than provide liquid for plants to drink. It breaks organic matter into soluble nutrients which it carries through the soil to the roots. Healthy soil allows water to soak in rather than run off, retaining some while allowing the excess to drain away. This leaves both moisture and air in the soil. No-dig gardening methods and increasing the amount of organic matter and humus in the soil improve its water-retaining ability. DIY in an afternoon WHAT YOU’LL NEED An enamelware bowl with lid An enamelware plate An electric drill and drill bits A sharp knife Brass or copper plumbing pipe and connectors A shifting spanner or pair of pliers A short rope or cord HOW TO DO IT 1 Mark the centres of the bowl, plate and lid and drill holes the same size as your piping.
