The garden A large mature garden in Constantia inspired by English gardens with features like hedging, a birch forest and an orchard. When Joyce and Richard Goldschmidt moved to their Constantia property 34 years ago, they readily admit they hadn’t a clue about gardening. “We just did what we’d seen our parents do,” says Joyce. Tomatoes are the most popular of all home-grown vegetables and the reason isn’t hard to find. Not many people know that after graduating from the University of Pretoria with a Fine Arts degree in sculpture, designer Carrol Boyes spent the next 10 years teaching art and English. It was her determination to make a living producing art that spurred Carrol to leave teaching at age 35. She started making jewellery and small sculptures in copper, silver and pewter. Her distinctive pewter cutlery proved so popular that in the early ’90s she opened the Carrol Boyes Functional Art Company, followed a few years later by her flagship store in Cape Town. WHERE TO START Walk around the garden and find the sunniest position. This is where roses will be happiest because they need at least six hours of sun a day. If your garden is very shady or lacks space, consider planting roses in pots and place them wherever there’s sun. Solanum jasminoides The blue or white potato vine, Solanum jasminoides (not to be confused with the alien invasive S. seaforthianum) has small clusters of fragrant dainty light-blue or white flowers in spring to late autumn. In colder areas the plant is semi-deciduous. In late winter, either prune hard to a length of 50 cm to 1m, or just take off dead twigs and leaves, depending on what’s needed.
