If you want to create extra privacy, rather than raising the height of your wall, use a light-weight metal trellis up which you can grow attractive climbers (see more about climbers on page 122). As it’s not a solid structure, it allows light, sun and air to penetrate, and when covered in creepers, looks extremely attractive.
Lawns, particularly near entrances, suffer from the wear and tear of constant foot traffic. To remedy this, Dot Milton of Somerset West laid pavers, but left wide spaces in between as a softening measure. She planted grass between the pavers adjacent to the house and patio, but used compact groundcovers beyond the low wall to merge with the garden beyond.
