The reason of course is that today, kitchens are used for so much more than just cooking. 1 CONCEALED STORAGE “A great way to maximise storage space is with floor-to-ceiling cupboards fronted by sliding doors,” says kitchen designer Charlotte Schulze of Easylife Kitchens in Centurion. “What’s more, if they have panels, you can insert anything from wallpaper to sandblasted glass to suit your kitchen decor. The garden A riverside area in the lower section of this historic garden in Kenilworth where large trees and lush plantings in shades of green and white were planted along the banks of the stream. When Andrew and Sandy Ovenstone moved into the family’s Cape Dutch manor house 30 years ago, the garden consisted of sweeping lawns, lots of trees, mainly English oaks, some hydrangeas and shrubberies and a driveway lined with old koffieklip stones. Over the years Sandy has not only become a passionate and knowledgeable gardener, but with the help of designers like David Hicks and Franchesca Watson, has created a series of captivating themed gardens within in the main one. Salvias, often referred to as sages, are charming plants with tall spires of flowers. They come in annual, perennial, biennial and shrub form, and with over 900 to choose from, you’re sure to find a couple to suit your garden. They hybridise easily so fabulous new varieties are released annually. Buy lily bulbs; select those with firm, plump scales and free of mould. Don’t let them dry out if you’re not planting them out immediately, or start them off in small containers. Foliar feed spring bulbs which have sprouted. 2 Cut back plectranthus that have finished flowering to encourage new shoots and dense growth; wait until spring in colder areas. Use the pieces you’ve trimmed off to propagate new plants to replace poor performers and old plants. 3 Feed bulbs and bedding plants; the latter can still be planted in beds and pots. Like the promise of sunshine, daffodils lift the spirits, penetrating the gloom of winter with their lively blooms just when it seems that spring will never arrive. “To ensure a stunning display, late April to early June is the time to plant your daffodil bulbs,” says Rian Swanepoel of Hadeco. Bulbs are available from most garden centres from late March. GROWING TIPS Plant them in light, dappled shade or a location that receives mild morning rays but is protected from the hot midday and afternoon sun. However circular, square and rectangular designs also work well – choose the shape that suits the area. Be aware of drainage. As this one is sunken, we installed a base drain, but if your soil drains easily and you have a gravel floor like ours, this isn’t necessary. Seats should be wide enough to comfortably accommodate cushions and allow for relaxed sitting, so we suggest 500–600mm for the width of the seat. Using art as inspiration isn’t the usual way of designing a garden. But drawing on ideas from the Cubist art movement, Lifestyle College students Praveer Sooka and Constance Smith (pictured above) conceived a dramatic contemporary garden that focuses on shape and texture. “Cubism is an art form that breaks every object into its simplest components, analyses them and then reassembles them in an abstract manner – every aspect of the object is there, but just not in the way you expect,” explains Constance. “Here we repurposed or reconfigured ordinary objects and materials to form new and unexpected features.” Praveer and Constance also mimicked Cubism by focusing on shape and its components through a limited colour palette, clean, modern lines and by keeping to a few plant varieties.
