Here at Garden and Home we’ve all had plenty of experience in living in small spaces. We know the advantages – less to clean, less to decorate, less to plant and maintain – and the disadvantages – too much clutter, the feeling of being cramped, and not enough room for guests. So, when selecting houses for this issue we looked for those filled with clever ideas for making the most of the available space. You can mirror the whole wall or hang a window pane version that creates interesting reflections. And contrary to popular belief, small spaces don’t have to be painted in light colours. Winter spice Although it’s used year-round, this covered patio in Durban comes into its own in winter. Charcoal walls give it a cosy, cocoon-like feel, and the owners, Anthony and Taryn Smith, chose spicy colours including mustard and marsala to add some winter warmth. Comfy scatter cushions invite guests to sit back and relax while a throw provides an extra layer of protection against the chill. “Like many of our readers I consider pets to be a part of the family,” says Mary Jane who has adopted a number of dogs over the years. The latest are Harry, a golden lab and Daisy, a brindle-coated cross-breed. “Daisy was adopted from Woodrock Animal Rescue but I think it was more a case of her choosing me rather than the other way around,” recalls Mary Jane. “A typical female – dainty and pretty, she doesn’t enjoy getting wet or dirty. One of the problems of living in a townhouse, cluster or on an estate is lack of privacy. Evergreen trees are a good way to screen the neighbours or the road. Depending on where you live, one of the easiest ways to give dry and grey-looking winter gardens a lift is to include evergreen shrubs. Their main benefit in garden design is that they look good all year round particularly in winter. At the back of beds or as hedging, they become the foundation of the garden layout, provide flow and uniformity and create a sense of vitality. CHOOSING EVERGREENS Choose plants in different shades of green. Include plants with shiny foliage; these reflect the light and give the garden a lift on dull days. The misty KZN Midlands with its country way of life, pretty gardens and farmers’ markets has always attracted new residents. “There were two Victorian fireplaces in the first house we bought,” recalls book editor Douglas van der Horst of his initial interest in tiles. “Someone had covered the tiled cheeks – the five tiles that are traditionally placed down either side of many fireplaces – with stove blacking. They were a mess.” Douglas set about cleaning them. One of the tiles was cracked, and when he removed this to repair it, he was thrilled to discover pencilled notes on the back, obviously the scribbling of the builder almost a century earlier – the sort of historical connection Douglas thrives on. I always admired the country scenes painted on this coffee pot on my aunt’s kitchen dresser. When she gave it to me I was surprised to see that it was made by Royal Doulton as the design seems out of character.
