Last time I walked the Kepler Track I was on a honeymoon. It was not my honeymoon but our friends’, who asked us to join them. While it might seem strange now, centuries ago honeymooners’ bridal tours were often taken with friends in order to visit those who were not able to attend the wedding. Ihave bought a campervan! After years of sleeping in the back of my two Nissan Pathfinder 4WDs I decided it was time for a change. The Pathfinders were superb – got me to remote places, and a full-sized foam squab in the back was as good as the bed at home – but sitting having a beer, cooking and just relaxing were weather dependent as that all had to be done outside, so I started looking. The second Pathfinder will be retained for future offroad adventures and so I entered the campervan market with some quite firmly fixed parameters. We had started the day in Taranaki, initially driving through to Stratford, on to Whangamōmona where we stopped alongside some vintage and classic cars at the hotel, before heading on to drive part of the Forgotten Highway. We only made one stop, at Joshua’s Graveyard for a walk through the bush, before turning left and heading up through Ōhura, across to Benneydale and on to Mangakino. Our eventual destination would be Mount Maunganui, so it would a west coast to east coast central road trip, with a planned stopover at Lake Maraetai Reserve, a very nice freedom camping place at Mangakino on the banks of the Waikato River. It will be 30 years in September 2022 since I started my first job in the caravan industry as a staff writer at Practical Caravan magazine – the UK’s best-selling caravan magazine. That was a dream job for me as I’d grown up on family caravan holidays touring UK and the rest of Europe; also, my father worked in sales roles for a couple of suppliers to the caravan industry for several years, so my interest in caravanning became quite an obsession. Arriving in Ōamaru, you almost feel as if you’ve been transported back in time. According to Whitestone City, the mini heritage museum within the town’s Victorian Precinct, Ōamaru was once as large and as busy as Los Angeles. With 17 hotels, a large harbour, rolling treeless hills ready to farm, and the close-by Otago Gold Rush in full swing, Ōamaru in the late 1800s was a prosperous place. And with this prosperity came growth. Grain production boomed, wool exports took off, and a plentiful supply of local limestone meant construction kept going and going. Once the bus was parked on my level driveway I could begin to look more closely at how I could make a flat floor. All the previous vehicles I have owned were fitted with a ‘corrugated’ steel floor and it was a fairly easy matter to make a wheel arch template, transfer that onto sheets of 12mm plywood and then cut them out and sit the panels directly onto the steel floorpan.
