The first month of winter has delivered it all, massive flooding in parts of the South Island at the beginning of the month and in the Wairarapa at the end of the month, torrential rain with a tornado in Auckland, ski fields opening with snow falling, and stunning sunny days following freezing frosts overnight, and of course for those in the Waikato, peering through fog for half the morning is keeping the region’s misty reputation intact. Whenever we leave on a journey from Coopers Beach, we’re full of good intentions to try somewhere new for lunch. However, lured by proximity, timing, ambience and good food, we invariably land up at Waipu Pizza Barn where on this occasion I enjoyed Barn-made potato gnocchi with tomatoes, black olives, fresh basil and parmesan together with a craft cider from Nelson’s Capital Cider Co. We’re on our way to Helensville, 58km south-west of Wellsford and 40km north of Auckland, where the following day we’ll begin a two-day voyage on the launch Kewpie Too. Mines were built searching mainly for gold and coal, but also at times for more exotic minerals, such as uranium. The best known mining heritage site is at Denniston, located on a dramatic plateau high above the northern West Coast. You can view the famous incline, considered at the time to be the eighth wonder of the industrial world, walk through the remnants of the mining township and along the rope road, passing interesting relics and reading the stories gathered together on interpretation panels. The pulse of the port city of Tauranga is Mount Maunganui, or Mauao to local tangata whenua. The extinct volcano sits at the tip of a narrow finger of land which has a long sandy beach on the ocean side, while on the inland side Pilot Bay is a calm harbourside beach near the entrance to Tauranga Harbour. Getting in and out of the cab of a motorhome involves a massive step and there is not much to hold on to. To make entering the cab much easier and safer Vantage RV can supply an access step and pull handle, making it so much easier to overcome the challenge of getting in and out of the cab. Country RV are investing heavily in the future of the RV industry in New Zealand, moving to easy-to-access premises, with main road frontage and a fully customised RV workshop facility that will provide exceptional service for customers. Debauchery and decadence once saw Russell dubbed the hellhole of the Pacific. That was in the 1800s though, and times have changed. Russell, sited on a peninsula across the bay from the tourist town of Paihia, is now a desirable destination. Due to the beauty of the Bay of Islands there are several scenic routes to the village. Options include taking a passenger ferry from Paihia, or the vehicular ferry from Ōpua, the long, winding coastal road between Whakapara and Russell, or the walking option of a round trip that takes in the 8.5km Paihia to Ōpua track, a stint as a passenger on the vehicular ferry followed by the 5.9km walk from Okiato to Russell itself. One of the better pieces of advice I received on a recent visit to Invercargill was to “look up”. So while my husband mulled over the merits of the vintage motorcycles in the E Hayes Hammer Hardware and Motorworks collection, I was staring at the ceiling in the giftware section. When the building was upgraded from its life as a 1920s car showroom, an architect apparently proposed to cover the exquisitely moulded and delicately painted ceiling. When you think of the Taranaki region and Mount Taranaki in particular, I bet that one of the first images that come to mind will be of Mounga Taranaki proudly towering over a body of water that reflects the mountain as perfectly as a mirror. I have seen a variation of this picture many times over the years, sometimes with a person posing at the lake, other times with the mountain mystically masked by clouds or covered in snow.
