ANAURA BAY Nestled between Tolaga Bay and Tokomaru Bay on the East Cape north of Gisborne, is the beautifully rugged Anaura Bay. It’s about 7km from the main highway, down a winding road that is often only wide enough for a single vehicle. Luckily there is not much traffic out this way, and the view that awaits you as you crest the final hill is more than worth the hairy drive in. There are two campgrounds here, and we chose to stay at the DOC-managed one as we have a DOC pass that, for a one-off annual fee, allows us to stay at most of their camps – except over the Christmas and New Year period. The small town of Whangamata bursts into life every year when the annual Beach Hop event revs into gear. This year marks the 19th running of an event that is now reputed to be one of the biggest of its kind in the world; petrolheads from all over the globe aspire to come over to see and share in the atmosphere of this five-day festival. Woof woof friends I have been so busy since my last column, I am exhausted woof. We have been visiting so many places I don’t think I can remember them all. Our new home is good, but I have only one local friend who comes up our long drive – grrrr, bit lonely that woofy way, no mates to bark out and talk to. Maybe that’s why we go out so much. Readers who follow Caspar’s Capers will know that we have relocated our lives from Martinborough to Pukekohe for a while. You will also know that a certain wee granddaughter lives here, so that is a clue as to the inevitable “why?” We are all enjoying the complete change of pace, going from a small village and 84km round trip to Masterton Pensive for groceries, to a 100km round trip for lunch at the Viaduct in Auckland City. A recent stop off at RnRV in Silverdale to see the latest Carthago motorhome really got us going. It’s not often we step into a motorhome these days and see something that is new with regard to layout design and one that rings our bells as much as this model did. UNDER PRESSURE In order to maintain vehicle safety and on-road stability, the most basic rule is that all tyres should be inflated to the correct pressure; an aspect particularly relevant to motorhomes. Under or over inflation will not only adversely affect handling; it can also lead to dangerous tyre failure. If you aren’t already aware of the correct inflation pressure for the tyres on your motorhome, check your vehicle’s handbook. While safety should be your first concern, be aware that incorrect tyre pressures can also lead to premature wear as well as increasing your vehicle’s fuel consumption. As such, taking proper car of your tyres will also save you money. Pressures should be checked and adjusted appropriately prior to any journey. This check should be made when the tyres are…

WINTERISING YOUR SOLAR EQUIPMENT The end of daylight saving is our cue to think about winterising the motorhome or caravan. The lengths we need to go to will depend upon which part of the country we live in, whether the vehicle will be under cover or outside, and if we have any plans to use it over the winter months. Winterising an RV is a common practice in many countries, but we do not have the very harsh winter conditions that many RVers in Europe and North America experience.
