It all started when I signed on as a general hand with White Desert, who offer luxury tours to Antarctica – the only continent I hadn’t yet been to.
My initial responsibilities included setting up the guest ice camps (they’re usually taken down at the end of each season), helping with the set-up of a brand-new camp, and later on, maintaining the camps and their respective runways. This involved tasks such as refuelling planes, melting and distributing water, digging out any planes and vehicles that had been snowed in by a storm, grooming and maintaining the runway, and finally, unloading and distributing cargo from any of the planes that landed and took off regularly.
I wasn't expecting to get a lot of free time, but I hoped to sneak in…
