The etymology of the word ‘podium’ stems from the Greek podion, meaning ‘foot of a vase’, which is essentially a raised platform in an arena. In short, where winners are glorified.
The race you ran finished in an arena, whether physical or imagined. Your feet placed you in the top three of your age group; ergo (to throw some Latin in there), you get a place on the podium (of your age group).
