As the recriminations began after England’s exit, we considered how best to put our sadness to one side and still enjoy the World Cup. The loss to Australia didn’t deter us from attending the next day’s Ireland-Italy game at the Olympic Stadium.
The Fisher family, father, son and grandson alongside father-in-law, wore England shirts, with the flag of St George as capes, Roman helmets and a sign ‘SPQR, the Lost Legion of Britannicus’. Our small legion had a fabulous day interacting with a multitude of international fans, the banter was sharp and funny, and we were stopped and photographed so many times we discussed a charging system!
The amount of people who shook our hands was amazing: Australians commiserated with us, Welshmen suggested changes, Irishmen enjoyed our pain but offered…
