SOMETIMES AN IMAGE just speaks to you. That’s how I felt about the bathroom on our cover this month, spotted while on one of my middle-of-the-night online interior design inspiration trawls. It’s by California-based designer Brooke Wagner (@brookewagnerdesign) and it evokes the exact vibes I love in a bathroom: calm, relaxing and earthy. The sandblasted limestone floor, zellige wall tiles, natural curtains and brass fittings are all so beautifully textural. And the accessories, well, they add a layer of decorative freshness that I think every bathroom needs. WHEN BEVERLEY NEWBOLD moved in to her Bondi apartment in 2015, she had every intention to renovate. “It took longer to materialise than actually expected, which is not uncommon,” she says with a laugh. EMERGING FROM THE HILLSIDE like a graceful extension of its natural surroundings, this stunning off-the-grid half-treehouse can be found 100 kilometres north of Manhattan in New York. JacobsChang Architecture was tasked with planning the 33-square-metre dwelling keeping two challenges in mind – one, that it would be built by the owners/amateur builders; and, two, to complete the build on a shoestring budget. JacobsChang rose to the occasion and, impressively, the final spend came in at under $30,000. Simple concrete footings anchor the home to the earth at one end, while at the other end, the cabin’s timber frame is supported by Garnier Limbs, an anchoring system that consists of metal bolted into the trees. UPON ARRIVING AT HISTORIC Osborn House, guests are greeted with elegance reminiscent of a grand Oxfordshire country home. Originally known as The Knoll, the home was built in 1892 by local resident George Osborn for his family. Fast-forward to the 2020s and a group of investors led by entrepreneur Adam Abrahams had a vision for the estate – to turn it into a luxury boutique hotel not often found in Australia.
