IT HAD BEEN A COMMUNAL DWELLING – home to several families – and was in a mess when Graham Atkins-Hughes and his wife Jo first saw the skinny, four-storey, early-1900s townhouse. Situated on the cliffs of Théoule-sur-Mer – near Cannes – Le Palais Bulles (or Bubble House) was designed by architect Antti Lovag, who was fascinated by Inuit and early, sphere-shaped dwellings. Built in 1989, the house is surprising and playful; a curvy labyrinth, with a futuristic feel. TO BUILD, SPHERES WERE MADE FROM LIGHTWEIGHT MESH AND RODS, THEN ROLLED AROUND THE SITE UNTIL THE POSITION WAS RIGHT. Concrete was poured around the frames and, voilà! BY THE TIME Mal Heppell and his wife Kate took over the keys of this Victorian terrace in the Noughties, it had seen better days. While Mal’s family had bought the property in the early 1980s, it had been run down by decades of renters.
