ONE OF THE MOST COMMON decorating questions I get asked is “Where can I buy affordable art?” (the other is “Will you do a makeover story on my home?”). This issue, we’ve answered just that with a list of some of our top places to buy prints, paintings, photographs – the lot. And all for reasonable prices. When I tell people where to find affordable art, I also suggest they think beyond the typical artwork – greeting cards, wallpaper samples, tea towels and magazine tear-outs all make fab wall decor and can cost as little as a few dollars. THERE ARE FEW THINGS LEFT in the world of design that can’t be produced then purchased in the blink of an eye. One of those things is meticulously handpainted wallpaper from London-based design house de Gournay – and, as you’re about to find out, it’s totally worth the three-to-six-month wait time. The family-run company was founded by Claud Cecil Gurney in 1986 after he took a trip to China in search of skilled artisans who could restore his antique wallpaper at home. who lives here? Jenna Lyons, former president and executive creative director of J.Crew. FOR MUCH OF HER PROFESSIONAL LIFE, Jenna Lyons, former president and executive creative director of US fashion brand J.Crew, inspired the way women dress and decorate. Thanks to her quirky and colourful sartorial ethos at the preppy fashion retailer, and her previous home in Brooklyn being one of the most-pinned interiors on Pinterest, Jenna’s style encouraged people to be braver with their fashion and interiors choices. There’s an art to hanging, well, art. Here are our top tips for any arrangement: 1 Large individual artworks should be hung with the centre point of the work at eye level. Usually, this point is about 1.5m from the floor. 2 To create a gallery wall, start with a hero piece to anchor the arrangement. Hang this piece as you would a solo artwork – with the centre point at eye level – and work out from there. Five to 10cm is a good gap between artworks. 3 If you’re hanging a pair of artworks, match the orientation of the artworks to the wall you’re hanging them on. English Spot rabbit Nyima is curious, sassy and freespirited… but let’s not talk about the time she nibbled on a pair of Jimmy Choos. Why a rabbit? My mother was a veterinarian and one day she brought home a tiny, sick rabbit. We named her Luna and nursed her back to health. Before long, a male rabbit broke into our backyard and Luna had babies. Nyima was one of them. What inspired the name Nyima? In mythology, rabbits are associated with moon deities, and I named her mother Luna for that reason. In Tibetan, Nyima means “one with radiance of the sun”, so there’s a celestial connection. Is Nyima shy? She’s so sassy! Nyima does whatever she likes.
