THE ART OF SHOU SUGI BAN
Shou Sugi Ban is an ancient Japanese exterior siding technique that preserves wood, usually cedar, by charring it with fire. Burning the timber creates a protective layer, making the wood more resistant to fire, rot and insects, and preserving it for up to 80 years. After the timber is charred, it is cooled and cleaned, before it’s finished off with a natural oil. In Australia it’s commonly known as charred timber cladding and is available to buy so you don’t have to do the charring yourself.
