I WAS BORN in Sydney in 1976 and grew up in Balmain. After finishing a Fine Arts degree I moved to Melbourne then travelled around the world before settling in LA in 2010. I’ve never been a grand-plan type of person, but LA just clicked with me. It’s been a fascinating five years. THE WORK I’M DOING at the moment requires me to keep a keen eye on the world around me. KATI HIENONEN USED TO SPEND childhood summers in her family’s log cabin near a lake, with happy memories of mucking around in boats. But when the cabin was eventually ruined by pesky birds that nested on the roof, it ended up being abandoned for decades – until about five years ago, when Kati decided to replace it with something new. THE DESIRE FOR LIGHT, LIGHT and more light was the driving force behind the buying and makeover of this three-level apartment in a 100-year-old building located in the middle of a buzzing city. While the apartment was rather worn, it was situated in the corner of the building, so had light flooding in from windows on two sides. But homeowner Barbara Iweins was after even more brightness – and had several internal walls removed, resulting in a magnificently open and spacious New York loft apartment feel.
