CONVERTING AN OLD-FASHIONED poky apartment into a home suitable for a contemporary, sociable lifestyle was a challenge for Theresa Arns and Carl Kai Rand, despite both being design professionals. Although the couple are architects and furniture designers (and in Carl’s case, a boat designer, too!), the main problem to overcome was the layout of the 105-sq-m home. There was the teeniest, tiniest bathroom, which was hardly big enough to swing a cat, and a dark kitchen and gloomy hallway. WHAT MIGHT BE mistaken for a shipping container at first is actually a cosy retreat used for rest, relaxation and entertaining. The simple box-shaped structure, called the Fire House, sits adjacent to a self-contained guesthouse built by two brothers, Lee and Wesley de Wit, on their family’s property (see pg 110). Its design – a rectangular concrete “room” – was inspired by mid-century-modernist architecture. “We wanted to use an architectural understanding to engage with the space in a different way,” Lee says. The flat roof and terraced landscape suggest the building has risen from the ground.
