Deborah Parenti, the publisher of Radio Ink, has been bugging me for a full year about doing an interview for Radio Ink and putting me on the cover. I was reluctant about both, because Radio Ink, and the radio industry, isn’t about me, it’s about you. I relented on the interview — but not the cover. I’m faced with a new challenge today, which is to craft a 25th-anniversary message. I’ve done a couple during the year, and there’s no need to repeat myself. There are few people who love radio more than I do. I love it with a deep passion. Perhaps that’s why, in the early 1980s, Scott Shannon gave me the moniker “Radio’s Best Friend.” It’s both an honor and a curse, but mostly it’s a good thing. The Radio Wayne Awards were started in 1992, the same year The Pulse of Radio became Radio Ink. Radio Ink Publisher Eric Rhoads created the awards, named after Wayne Cornils, to recognize outstanding performance in radio leadership, management, and sales. In 1992 there was only one category, Broadcaster of the Year, and that first Radio Wayne was won by Val Maki. Today, there are seven categories. In the Radio Ink 20th-anniversary issue, published November 19, 2012, the article “10 Legal Issues to Watch for in the Next 10 Years” speculated on the challenges our radio industry might face through 2022. Included in the list were music performance fees, ownership regulation, spectrum use, AM radio, indecency, licenserenewal expectancies, HD Radio, mobile DTV, interference, and the public interest. This article, five years later for Radio Ink’s 25th anniversary, tries to own up to the failures and misplaced clairvoyance of the previous predictions, and naively attempts to again forecast the next 10 years. The talent of the future are no longer simply associated with a brand, they are the brand. The radio talent of the future will be a social media and digital force. The talent will be horizontally integrated in the digital space, able to be consumed in visual, written, and audio form to be everywhere with and for the audience, live or on demand. He or she will become part of the local or national conversation as an influencer, first mover, and social leader, yet reachable on a one-on-one basis. IN his July column in Radio Ink, my old friend and colleague Eric Rhoads wrote about the early days, when the idea was new and the money was tight, and about the “lessons learned” as he and his partner began building the powerful, reliable trade magazine and voice of sales and management for the radio industry, Radio Ink. In his early 20s, Eric Rhoads owned three radio stations, located in Salt Lake City and New Orleans. After selling the properties in 1986, he founded Giant Boom Box, manufacturing remote radio studios, and three years later he launched Streamline Publishing, which today publishes Radio Ink magazine. In 1997, Eric published his first book, Blast From the Past: A Pictorial History of Radio’s First 75 Years. And in 1999 he started Radio Central, a network of custom Internet radio stations. Radio Ink has witnessed and reported on a quarter of the industry’s existence, and we plan to continue that coverage for many more decades.
