I talk to a lot of people in radio, specifically on the topic of stress, anxiety, depression, and how to get more out of their teams. Some of the comments I’ve heard have become all too familiar, including: “The biggest problem in radio is that people are afraid to take a risk, for fear of failing.” Workplace dynamics in radio haven’t kept up with the changing business landscape. We are told to “think outside the box” — yet the “box” isn’t clearly defined anymore, since radio has already changed so much. What if all we need to succeed is inside that box? This was a tough assignment. Top 20 based on what? One could consider ratings, longevity, originality, influence, or many other criteria. Some stations have been amazing at times and just awful at others. Many of the most spectacular Top 40 stations weren’t around that long. Many stations that are just average have lasted a long time. At the time we went to print with this issue in 2016, Greater Media had agreed to sell its 21 stations to Beasley Media Group for $240 million. The ink was barely dry on the deal and it was business as usual at Greater Media at that time, which is why Smyth remained on the list. The deal closed on November 1, 2016, and Smyth left the business. He exits our list after 16 straight years (2002 to 2017). John Eck made a one-year stop on our power list as the revolving door of leadership continues at Univision’s radio division.
