Albert Feldman has been quilting for 14 years. He designs quilting patterns and uses a computerized embroidery machine to quilt his designs. Most of his work emphasizes quilting rather than piecing. wave patterns provide the basis for many interesting quilting designs. They create impressive visual effects—especially in wholecloth quilts. A basic wave consists of wiggles that progress in one direction. The wiggles may be periodic or may vary in spacing and height. A wave pattern consists of an array of waves in a particular geometric arrangement. In this article, two types of wave patterns are depicted: parallel waves and radial waves. Computer technology allows these quilting designs to be sewn very precisely. Computerized quilting & designing For the precise results, I use a computerized embroidery machine. The fabric is placed firmly in a hoop. The embroidery machine then moves it under the sewing head following the computerized design in a manner similar to free-motion quilting. There are many types of fabric dyes on the market, just as there are many types of fibers. Each fiber type can be colored by dye, but there is no one dye that will work well with all the different types of fiber. There are three main groups of fiber types: cellulose, protein, and synthetic. Types of Fiber Cellulose fibers are the ones we, as quilters, are most familiar. Cellulose is the main molecule in the cell walls of all plants, and so all cellulose fibers are made from plants. The main cellulose fiber is cotton, but linen, jute, ramie, hemp, sisal, and rayon are other common cellulose fibers. Protein fibers are made by animals and include wool, alpaca, mohair, angora, cashmere, and silk. NOTE: Silk is the only protein…

shortly after starting my quilting journey, I began exploring mixed-media art. I spent a lot of time experimenting with acrylic paints and surface design. At some point, it occurred to me that since an artist’s canvas was just heavy fabric, why couldn’t I just paint a quilt with acrylics. I tried it and I found out I could. Using lightweight muslin and leftover fabric scraps, I constructed a free-motion quilted quilt top. Using that as my “canvas,” I prepared the top with gesso, just like I would have prepped an artist’s canvas. The result is a quilted canvas ready for surface design. at Quilt National 2011, Daphne Taylor’s piece “Quilt Drawing #13—for Maureen” stopped me in my tracks. The play of light on the off-white silk was amazing. The design was simple, yet so powerful. Unless my articles are your very first exposure to dyeing with Procion MX, you may be wondering why I don’t use salt and/or urea while dyeing. I have read many books and online sources about dyeing through the years and it seems that many people use different methods to achieve their given results, and often people use salt and/or urea. I understand your confusion! As I grew in my confidence as a dyer, I started applying my scientific background to the process and designed experiments that would test the varying factors that I saw from dyer to dyer. Set up the printing space on a flat surface—any folds, cracks or patterns will leave their mark on your print. Cover the surface with a nonabsorbent material (plastic painter’s cloths, inexpensive party table cloths, or plastic bags for smaller projects). If working outdoors, find a space protected from wind and free of cast shadows. Put weights on the corners of the covering to keep it in place in the event of a breeze. Make a small sample print on the fabric you will be using to visualize color blending and suitability of the material. Don’t be constrained by the color of paint in the jars, consider gradients or other color blending in each layer. The better the contact, the sharper the print. for almost 10 years I’ve been traveling around the country showing and selling my art quilts. I started doing small local shows and taking advantage of opportunities to hang my work in the library and restaurants in my community. Seeking to broaden my horizons and increase sales, I explored regional shows next, and then took the plunge into juried national shows. Dye concentrate is powdered Procion MX dye mixed with water. Dye concentrate is the starting point—it can be further diluted and mixed with other dyes to create new hues in the dyeing process. Once you have the dye concentrate mixed, you are ready to go for several dyeing sessions. To make the concentrate: In a cup, mix 1½ teaspoons of dye powder with 2 tablespoons of warm water to form a paste. Add 2 more tablespoons to create a slurry. Add ½ cup more water and stir well. Pour this into your squeeze bottle. Use ¼ cup of water to rinse out the mixing cup and add this to the bottle. Shake to mix. ALTHOUGH IT MY SOUND FUNNY, I HAVE asked my mother to leave me one thing: a certain entirely handmade and hand-quilted quilt. I believe by now it is over 50 years old. We grew up in Utah amid the dominant-religion-bred quilters— fabulous quilters. If you were Mormon, it was likely that you quilted. And my mom, who was not Mormon, made this incredible quilt with her dear friend and submitted it to the local fair.
