There are many types of fabric dyes on the market, just as there are many types of fibers. Each fiber type can be colored by dye, but there is no one dye that will work well with all the different types of fiber. There are three main groups of fiber types: cellulose, protein, and synthetic.
Types of Fiber
Cellulose fibers are the ones we, as quilters, are most familiar. Cellulose is the main molecule in the cell walls of all plants, and so all cellulose fibers are made from plants. The main cellulose fiber is cotton, but linen, jute, ramie, hemp, sisal, and rayon are other common cellulose fibers.
Protein fibers are made by animals and include wool, alpaca, mohair, angora, cashmere, and silk.
NOTE: Silk is the only protein…
