Size: 53cm x 38cm (21in x 15in) How did you come up with the idea for the quilt? I had just finished a major work for Brenda Gael Smith’s textile art exhibition, Living Colour. My quilt, entitled And on the Seventh Day He Rested (shown below, right), included a bright and colourful Cordyline plant based on one in my garden, just outside the room where I paint my quilts. I just simply had to make another quilt featuring that magnificent Cordyline. As I said about the quilt for Living Colour, I find the world to be an intricate and glorious creation, and I’m constantly amazed and excited by the spectacular colours that fill it and the vast diversity of living things. Constructing the quilt top is only half our journey towards completing a quilt. The quilting of the three layers is integral to the finished look of the project. Big quilts can be hard to handle on a domestic machine and bigger machines can make this job easier. I recently played on the Q’nique 14+ quilting machine, a new mid-arm quilting machine from The Grace Company. This machine lies between a domestic sewing machine and a long-arm machine for available sewing space. Like a long-arm machine, the Q’nique sits on a large frame and the quilt top and backing are loaded on rollers. The machine moves over the quilt, rather than your moving the quilt under the needle. But it’s like buying a car: there are so many options to consider.…

Tools Of The Trade Sewing Machine – Any machine can be used for quiltmaking. It is helpful to have a darning foot as an attachment for the machine for free machine quilting. Iron and ironing board – Make these readily available near your sewing machine so that all seams can be pressed to assist in accurate piecing. Needles – Most quilters favour a ‘between’ needle, size 8-12 for both hand-sewing and hand-quilting. Size 12, the smallest size, is usually used by very experienced quilters. Sewing Thread – Use any cotton or cotton-covered polyester thread. For machine quilting, use cotton, cottoncovered polyester, monofilament or decorative threads. QC#78 There’s a wonderful variety of projects in our next issue of Quilters Companion. One of the stars of the show is a superb machine-appliquéd wallhanging created by Katrina Hadjimichael that was included in the Red and White special exhibition at last year’s Sydney Quilt Show. The largest quilt show in Europe, the European Patchwork Meeting (EPM), was held in September last year and was another marvellous success by all accounts. Staged in four villages of the Val d’ Argent near Sainte Marie aux Mines in Alsace, France, EPM 2015 showcased more than 1200 quilts in a series of specialist shows. They included a display from South Korean quiltmakers, solo exhibitions by Genevieve Attinger and Sheila Frampton-Cooper, and the Best of QuiltCon 2015, among others. Each year EPM stages an international contest on a chosen theme. The theme for 2015 was “reflection”. Kathryn Harmer Fox won first prize with her work A Life Lived in Ink. Have you ever used clear threads when machine quilting, perhaps successfully, perhaps not? Well, I would like to share with you one of my all-time favourite threads, MonoPoly. This wonderfully versatile thread is made by Superior Threads. I visited their website for some information and this is what it said: “Our reducedsheen monofilament polyester is the best choice when it comes to invisible threads. Unlike other monofilament threads made from weaker nylon materials, MonoPoly is made from polyester. Commonly referred to as an invisible thread due to its fineness and reduced-sheen, MonoPoly is great for the bobbin or top.
