Quilts made by Australians that were chosen for Quilts=Art=Quilts 2023 included Canopy 18 Burning (left) by Anna Brown; The Writing is on the Wall (following page) by Jessica Wheelahan; and Echoes of Summer (far left) by Judy Hooworth. The Art Center has been a longstanding proponent of quilts as a visual arts medium and has been presenting quilts in a gallery setting since 1981. The most recent Quilts=Art=Quilts exhibition was held from October 28, 2023 through to January 7, 2024. The 2023 jurors were Chawne Kimber and Irene Rodrick. All members are eligible to enter this juried exhibition. A juror may be a local artist, usually a textile artist, or someone known nationally. They are sent images (one full and one detail of each entry) and are asked to choose a cohesive show through these alone. It’s not an easy task. The reward for entrants is being chosen, through this process, to have a quilt in the SOTA exhibition and to have their quilts displayed in a number of Queensland art galleries in the following months. The exhibition travels throughout south-east Queensland and brings the art of quilting to the general public. It opens their eyes to the realisation that quilts can be art pieces. It was juried into the 2023 Houston Quilt Festival and was a semi-finalist at the 2024 Road to California Quilt Contest. It went on to take out the prize for Best Stationary Machine Workmanship at the 2024 American Quilters’ Society Daytona Beach QuiltWeek show, where Mariya was the only Australian quiltmaker to win an award. In March it was awarded Best of Show at the American Quilters’ Society Branson QuiltWeek show. The quilt was then entered into the American Quilters’ Society QuiltWeek Paducah show, where it was awarded one of the four top coveted awards — Best Stationary Machine Workmanship. This quilt was Pam Hill’s entry into the Queensland Quilters’ SOTA 23 (State of the Art) competition. The theme was Flora. Pam’s quilt is an original design and is machine pieced using hand-dyed and commercial fabric, polyester satin and silk. She free-hand-machine quilted with cotton and silk thread on her Bernina 750 machine. She also used trapunto for added dimension to the flower. It won first prize. Much of the road is also known as the Great Central Road. I left home with all the Japanese-style and shibori hand-dyed fabrics in my collection and the idea to hand piece Flying Geese. This quilt documents our 10-week trip, direction, distances (each goose is 100km (62miles), side trips and special events of this enjoyable journey. Red for the dirt, brolgas and cockatoos.
