Many years ago, in a small town in America, Molli would watch his grandmother quilt and even help with putting things together. “I specifically remember helping my grandmother lay out her quilt blocks on the living room floor,” Molli explains. “I didn’t know it then, but I think that may have kickstarted my creative interest in quilting. A Century of Sewing In 1921, Janome Sewing Machine Co Ltd was founded as Japan’s first domestic sewing-machine manufacturer. Yosaku Ose, a pioneer in Japanese sewing manufacturing, came up with the idea of replacing the conventional oblong ‘shuttle-type’ bobbin with an unprecedented round bobbin design. This new shape was thought to resemble the eye of a snake, hence, as the new machine gained ground, it was affectionately referred to as Janome (pronounced: Ja-No-Mey), meaning ‘the snake’s eye’ in Japanese. Janome changed the world of sewing with the invention of the round bobbin and continues to challenge tradition and establish new benchmarks in sewing-machine technology. The annual Queensland Quilters' fabric challenge is always popular among members. Each year, a new fabric is selected for entrants to work with, with the requirement that at least 20 per cent of the front of each quilt must feature the selected fabric. Guidelines stipulate that all finished entries must be 50cm x 70cm (20in x 27½in) in size, and be either portrait or landscape orientation. Entrants can use any method or style that they like for their project, however they must be a current or previous member of Queensland Quilters to enter. Prizes are awarded for First, Second and Third overall, as well as Best Artistic/Quirky and Best Traditional.
