Jenny designed this quilt to showcase the fabric range Dandi Annie by Robin Pickens for Moda, using the Beach and Boots block. She has added sashings between the blocks and turned each block 180 degrees to each other to give the effect of up and down rows. However, if you place the blocks against each other, all facing the same direction, you will achieve a chevron effect with an interesting sub pattern made by the smaller triangles. The simple classic geometric block offsets the colours and patterns within the fabric range. This block is also called Ribbons Border and Watered Ribbon and Border. On my cutting table I have a large glass bowl that I throw all my Liberty scraps into. The bowl was becoming very full — it was actually overflowing — but it just lingered there. We had a few things happening at the start of the year and I found myself unable to concentrate. So one day, in an attempt to silence the thoughts racing in my mind, I started to sort the Liberty scraps into colours. I then started to randomly piece the scraps together until I had bigger pieces. This quilt is made up of 35 regular- and 24 foundationpieced blocks. Each block is in a different fabric combination, with 42 of the blocks having fabric combinations that flow into surrounding blocks. It’s particularly important to follow the instructions regarding labelling of your fabrics, cut pieces and finished blocks to ensure the flow is maintained. All blocks are set on-point, however for ease of instruction, all blocks, rows etc are assembled ‘on-square’ and the pieced top is simply tilted back to the familiar rectangle position when adding the border. This interlocking ring quilt pattern has been designed by American quilter Cheryl Brickey and is formed using traditional Kaleidoscope blocks in combination with plus signs. The plus sign’s popularity in quilts has withstood the test of time, with new plus sign quilts being made every year. Rebecca Hastings has always had an affinity for craft, exposed to varying handcrafts from a young age. “My mother crocheted Afghan blankets, designed tapestries, cross stitch and embroidery, as well as painting with oils and watercolours,” Rebecca explains. “I used to watch her sew on a chunky old Elna and it was inevitable that I would develop a passion for fabric.” Rebecca’s passion for handmade continued to flourish as she began to experiment with her own creative pursuits, trying her hand at making clothes, curtains, cushions, soft toys, manchester — even chunky knitting. At the 2018 QuiltNSW Sydney Quilt Show there was a special category, Southern Stars. This quilt was Megan’s submission for that category. Each of the 25 stars represents one million Australian people — 25 million people living in communities all over the country with different backgrounds but connected under the Southern Stars. The block is Eight Pointed Star. There are 25 different striped fabrics, one per star, fussy cut to create a secondary design. A simply pieced, but quite effective quilt depending on the colours and placement of your fabrics. Maree purchased this vintage 1930s quilt at Quilt Festival in Houston in 2016. The blocks are pieced with alternate prints and plains and there is a white hexagon. The pieced blocks are made up of six kites — three each of two different fabrics, but you could make yours all scrappy. All the templates are on the Pattern Sheet, including a half hexagon that you can use on the top and bottom edge of the quilt to make straight edges. This quilt was designed specifically to showcase Rebecca’s favourite animal prints. There is a collection of animals from various ranges featured in the 30 lantern shapes. You could use a different novelty print collection to feature in the lantern centres. Added to the animal prints are 10 fat eighths of shot cottons, five fat eighths of light to medium grey linen fabrics, and 12 fat eighths of assorted geometric print fabrics. The background fabrics are a mix of upholstery-weight and linen fabrics, which, along with the shot cottons, add depth and texture to the quilt top.
