Hello dear quilters, here we are, more than halfway through the year, and halfway through winter in Australia. While it’s absolutely wonderful to sit and quilt in winter (assuming you hand quilt — not me!), it is exciting to think that the days are growing longer and we can make more time for sewing. I have always held the opinion that we should support Australian quilters and quilts, and I have done this through publishing and quilt events for three decades. However, we cannot close our eyes to fantastically talented quilters and textile artists from around the world. There is nothing difficult about making this quilt. It is large and impressive, the colours are fabulous, and the design makes use of your machine’s embroidery stitches. Look closely and you will see that the circles in this quilt feature decorative stitches. This has been achieved with a circular attachment: it is ideal for sewing circles using straight stitch, zig-zag, decorative stitches or even lettering. All sewing machine brands have this attachment available, and with them you can sew perfect circles up to 26cm (10¼in) in diameter. Which threads will you use to embroider the circles? New Zealand quilter Sheila Christensen has developed a set of techniques and a ‘language’ that will allow you to play with the 60° shape with ease. If you are familiar with rotary cutting and stitching squares, you will have no trouble cutting your shapes using a quilting ruler and cutter for this bright happy quilt. This is a perfect project for using your favourite bundle of 2½in strips. Sheila used a pre-cut 2½in strip bundle of Hey Dot by Zen Chic for Moda for the main areas, and for the background she chose a variety of low-volume prints. • it’s important to cut and sew accurately right from the beginning of this project so that your quilt top is the correct size for the Flying Geese border to fit its edges • if you find that your Flying Geese rows are too long, re-sew some of the seams a little wider. There’s no need to unpick the original seams – just sew another one alongside them. Anita is an accomplished quilting educator who inspires and mentors students around Australia in the art of quilting, on domestic sewing machines, long-arm machines, and everything between. When not travelling with her education business, Hillside Quilting, home base is Anita’s studio, set among the gum trees of Warrandyte on the rural edge of Melbourne, Victoria. Cheryl Filby's favourite appliqué technique is fusing the shapes with double-sided fusible web and then machine or hand stitching the shapes in place. Almost all of this quilt has been made with this technique, except for the borders, which are mostly pieced. Made with only tones of Madder and Indian red and a cream background, this quilt would be a great stash buster for that pile of reds! There are many different triangle rulers on the market. You will need one where the measurements run from top to bottom and indicate the height of the triangle you are cutting. Of those, there are two types: point tip and blunt tip. Point-tip rulers: The measurements on these rulers start at the very tip of the ruler. Brands include Clearview Triangle (by C&T Publishing), Matilda’s Own and SewEasy. Blunt-tip rulers: The measurements start at the top of the ruler, which doesn’t include the top ¼in of the triangle tip. Brands include Creative Grids and Quilt in a Day rulers. This quilt has been constructed with basic Log Cabin blocks set into a complex vortex. It was exhibited at the 2018 Houston Quilt Festival, and in March this year it was exhibited at the International Patchwork Festival in Sitges, Spain. Art quiltmaker Montse Forcadell Blasco of Catalonia, Spain, explained that, “Apart from getting the light at the bottom of the tunnel, it also had to be reflected in the dark areas with the same colour as its origin.” Spanish quilter Montse Forcadell Blasco has mostly expressed her quilting art with fluid lines and appliqué. However, after she made Fresa Con Chocolate (Honorary Mention at Festival of Quilts, Birmingham 2016) she realised that, while she had a good command of colour, shadows and details, once finished, the fabrics still looked flat.…

Lorraine’s preferred method of stitching these days is hand stitching — and this is a perfect pattern for this slow and satisfying process. These shapes could be sourced as papers and used to create the quilt using the English paper piecing method, however the instructions are for making your own templates and drawing the shapes onto the back of your fabrics. This is a great stash buster — in fact, Lorraine used only fabrics from her stash. The inclusion of light squares across the quilt helps calm the scrappy look and draw the eye to the smaller squares. Featuring seven different blocks — each with numerous units — this quilt is not difficult. With patience and attention, and working one block at a time, you will reach the end goal with little trouble. Fabrics are prepared with quick and easy rotary cutting, then simple piecing with half-square triangles, quarter-square triangles and squares will complete the blocks. A jelly roll, strip piecing and cross cutting into squares, simple HST and piecing are the combination for the success of this traditional and classic Ocean Waves quilt. The pattern takes on a distinctly Indonesian feel with the use of a Batik jelly roll. This pattern isn’t difficult, but it is time-consuming. You will need some staying power to stitch the hundreds of HSTs together, but it’s worth it. Look at how the triangles shimmer and move in the finished quilt — imagine how gorgeous it would be scrappy! At first glance this block looks like a nine patch, and indeed it is, but look again. Within the nine patch there are five Square-ina- Square blocks. More recently the name Economy has been attributed to this block. The other obvious pattern is Flying Geese — and don’t they look great whizzing around the outer borders? Keryn works almost exclusively in reproduction fabrics and traditional blocks, and this quilt fits that description. You can see more of her work over at her blog (details below). This quilt pattern is based on a bright Pinwheel Daisy quilt that is part of Deirdre’s collection of antique quilts. The original has pink sashing and green cornerstones and borders. Deirdre didn’t have many plain fabrics in her stash, so she just kept using prints. She has used 1930s reproduction fabrics from her stash, but this would look great in contemporary prints too. The appliqué pieces have been prepared using Hugs N Kisses appliqué paper. They are then positioned and sewn by machine using monofilament thread and a blind hem stitch. These papers eliminate the need for needleturn appliqué by hand, dramatically decreasing the time it will take to make the quilt.
