Although summer is officially over in the southern hemisphere, the days of March still bring a fair share of sunshine. “I had used a domestic sewing machine to do my quilting, then I saw the long-arm while at a friend’s place and knew I had to have one,” she recalls. As her interest in quilting grew, Tracey Bareli decided she needed a designated sewing space, so she got rid of all the furniture in her formal lounge and moved her supplies in. “I have a huge window looking out onto the street, which is great for light, and I can watch what’s going on in the neighbourhood while I sew,” Tracey explains. The inspiration for this delightful baby quilt came to Louise from the Grandmother’s Fan block and its versatility. This lovely, happy sunshine shape is meant for a baby — the square quilt shape allows it to also be used as a playmat. Techniques used include hand piecing, machine piecing, needleturn appliqué and hand quilting with Perle thread. The instructions are provided for piecing the sun block by hand. If you prefer to machine piece it, simply add a ¼in seam allowance around each of the patterns before making your templates. After tracing around the templates, cut out these shapes on the traced lines. This delightful baby quilt has been hand quilted using yellow Perle No 8 thread and larger-than-normal stitches. There is so much to love about this quilt, designed and hand-made by Helen Draper. It’s full of fancy! It combines two all-time favourite blocks, Dresden Plate and Double Wedding Ring, which have been placed on point to add further appeal. Helen has designed the Dresden blocks to feature a flower centre surrounded by a chunky version of the wedges of the traditional blades. The lighter background of the Dresden Flower blocks brings them to the foreground. Sitting quietly, and very attractively, behind is the Double Wedding Ring. When making this quilt, Victoria Findlay Wolfe used the curve to give the simple braid technique a powerful twist. Bias is always an issue with curves, and this quilt is no different. Even when taking care to pin the centre and edges, you will still have a stretchy top. The rows help keep it in check, but Victoria advises “… for visual effect, sometimes a quilter has to do what a quilter has to do for a beautiful-looking quilt.” She used two fat-quarter bundles of a similar palette to make them work as one for this gradational quilt. This quilt was designed by Jemima Flendt in the same fashion as those that appear in her recently released book, Quilt Big. It follows the idea of the beauty found in single-block patterns that can be upsized to create big, bold quilts quickly and easily. This quilt features the one block and showcases the denim by adding small prints. The block requires no templates or special shapes; it is simply made by cutting strips and cross-cutting them into squares. There are 25 mostly denim blocks and 24 mostly print blocks. These are laid out in seven rows of seven, with alternating directions. This layout creates the secondary pattern of squares with four triangles. Welcome to the Block Masterclass tutorial series where we teach you how to hand and machine piece some of the most famous blocks you’ve always wanted to learn to make. Dresden Plate The Dresden Plate owes its name to the German city of Dresden, where porcelain plates decorated with elaborate flowers, fruits and foliage designs were produced. These plates became the inspiration for the Dresden Plate quilt block. During the 1920s and ‘30s, these blocks were some of the most popular designs. The Dresden Plate pattern combines sewing and appliqué skills. Typically, the plate is made of 16 to 20 blades, wedges or petals in addition to the centre circle. This traditional red and green antique appliqué quilt is dated from the 1850s. Michelle purchased it from Julie Silber in America — with is quirky appliqué and whimsical border treatment it was too much for Michelle to resist. And she did not have a bird in her collection of quilts. That is her excuse and she is sticking with it! In antique appliqué patterns, the Coxcomb was inspired by the shape of Cockscomb flowers, also known as Wool Flowers or Brain Celosia. The flower’s name is suggestive of a rooster’s comb. The ombre effect of colour and value can be achieved by following Michelle’s instructions to make this bright, bubbly quilt. Colour theory can frighten even the most skilled sewers, but Michelle has made it short and simple for you. Put simply, colour is actually the perception of light; the less light, the fewer colours we see. In the instructions you will find her colour theory and more advice to achieve this look. Leanne has used 28 fat eighths of coordinated print fabrics to create this runner that can be used for either a table, or across the bottom of a bed. Basket, Four-patch and Crisscross blocks are combined to make this runner in black, red and white fabrics. You can substitute the fabric colours and even change up the quantities of each block. And if you are really loving it, make more blocks and extend it to a lap or bed quilt! This pattern is very easy to sew. Our sew-along with Deborah Dorward’s charming appliqué quilt, Baltimore Blooms, comes to an end. In the past four issues the 16 blocks have been presented, and on the following pages we feature instructions for completing the quilt. The amazing red and green Baltimore Album quilts of the 1800s probably would have used only one or two types of flowers throughout the quilt, remaining consistent with the same green and red fabric repeated, however Deborah was inspired by so many of the wonderful quilts made so long ago that she simply couldn’t choose only one flower.
