My enduring aim as an editor has been to create a magazine that is a strong, reliable and enjoyable part of our quilting community. Although we are not together in person, as you read the magazine I hope you feel a sense of being part of a group of like-minded souls. Combining needleturn appliqué and machine piecing, this medallion-style quilt works out from a central wreath, surrounded by quarter-square triangles pieced into a zigzag strip and appliqué birds that are whimsical and naïve. Adding even more to the charm is Michelle’s use of vintage buttons from her collection; not only are they embellishment, they have the practical job of holding the three layers together in lieu of quilting in those borders. Many quilters have a stash of Kaffe Fassett fabrics, and if not, possibly soon will in order to reproduce Michelle’s gorgeous quilt. Maree St Clair bought this quilt from Cindy Rennels, an antique dealer in America. While its provenance is sketchy, it’s believed to be an original quilt made in the 1930s in Ohio. The quilt contains a wide variety of 1930s fabrics and lots of feedsacks. Maree has recreated this quilt with reproduction 1930s prints and plain-coloured quilter’s muslin. Quilts from the 1930s are some of the most sought-after by quilt collectors. Many of the original backgrounds are simple quilter’s muslin; bright pinks, blues, yellows and reds were also common background colours. The prints were an array of small and large florals, geometrics, polka dots, plaids, stripes and novelty prints — a happy collection of colours and prints. When you consider that true Baltimore Album quilts were made only in Baltimore between the years 1846 and 1852, it’s impressive this pattern lives on and remains a favourite. Antique quilts, in particular Baltimore Album quilts, are among Deborah Dorward’s favourites. Jackson is in da house This year Jackson Cook, aged 16, entered two quilts in the Sydney Quilt Show’s Years 7–12 section. Both were awarded prizes: Quincy received second prize, and Tumbling Down won third prize. Jackson first started quilting as a 13-year-old and had been making sewn items for some years prior. I have always designed my show quilts to challenge myself to do the best work I possibly can at the time, whether it’s trying a new technique style or quilting it with designs I haven’t tried before You started quilting in 2001 and teaching in 2005. This colourful quilt is a collaboration between Chris Jurd and an unknown quilter. The maker of the ‘arcs’ is a mystery that will never be solved, but thanks to Chris they have been sewn into a wonderful ‘marriage’ of colour and will live as the lively basis of this quilt. The vintage Double Wedding Ring arcs were purchased at the Houston Quilt Show in 2008. They’ve been languishing in Chris’ cupboard ever since. Recently, Chris had the idea to combine them with lots of bright solids, allowing the wide range of prints to take centre stage. It seems they were made in the ‘40s; they are sewn by hand, using mostly feed sack fabrics with a very open weave. Chris found that some of them required a bit of resewing,…

In this block the ‘Flying Geese’ are radiating outwards. 1 Starting with a centre square, a triangle is added to each side. 2 All the other triangles in the block are the same size. Sew one to each edge of the central unit. 3 The following three rounds of ‘logs’ are all the same width — and are trimmed at 45-degree angles at each end. 4 After four trimmed logs are sewn to the sides, stitch a triangle across the corner.…

The instantly recognisable Paisley pattern goes back many hundreds of years. During the 1600s the pattern began to appear on shawls that were specifically designed for men. Historians have dated the earliest-discovered piece of textile work with the design to around 1680. At the end of the 18th century, the town of Paisley in Renfrewshire, Scotland, was a major producer of silk. Due to the effects on trade by the Napoleonic Wars, many skilled workers were unemployed. In a local silk mill, an order for Paisley-shaped patterns in shawls was filled and the town developed its skills, bestowing the name on the now iconic Paisley shape. 1 Start small and work your way up to larger quilts. It takes practice and stamina to quilt large quilts. 2 Don’t be too hard on yourself; we all started as beginners — no one started as an expert. 3 Remember the more you quilt, the better you become. It doesn’t happen just by wishing you were better. 4 Find two or three designs you are comfortable with and make quilts with them. Keep adding another design to your collection every project and you will soon have lots of designs you can adapt for anything. 5 When it comes to straight-line quilting using your walking foot, GO SLOW and increase your stitch length (I use a 4). In Lynn Schmitt’s book, The Art of Mixing Textiles in Quilts, this tote pattern offers two variations. They are identical in their shape, form and basic construction, but there are design differences in how the elements of the bag are articulated. The first version, Market Tote with Appliqué, is what we’re sharing here: it has pieced front and back panels. The front is accented with wool appliqué and couched yarn in one of Lynn’s favourite motifs: the poppies of the Umbrian region of Italy. Leanne Harvey is well known for her modern take on old favourites, and she didn’t disappoint when designing this quilt exclusively for QC readers. The idea for a modern Log Cabin quilt had been on her mind for some time, and Logan will take pride of place as her bed quilt. Due to the length of the logs/strips required it is very important to achieve accuracy every step of the process. Therefore, these logs are cut from the length of the fabric. The lengthwise grain of fabric has virtually no stretch, the crosswise grain has a little. The lengthwise grain of fabric runs parallel to the selvedge, so by cutting the logs from the length you will have less chance of stretching. However, with no stretch it is even more…

Toile de Jouy is a well recognised pattern of isolated vignettes of historial figures or landscapes. Only 25km from the city of Paris is the town of Jouy en Josas. Here you can visit the beautiful Chateau de l’Églantine and the museum devoted to the making of Toile de Jouy, Musée de la Toile de Jouy. At the end of the 17th century, Europe was introduced to cotton fabrics printed with flowers and brightly coloured animals that were being imported from India (Indiennes). These imports put extreme pressure on the traditional French manufacturers of silk and cotton, and Louis XIV decreed the imports would be prohibited throughout the country. The ban was lifted in 1759 and in 1760, Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf, an entrepreneur of German origins, moved to Jouy en Josas…

The curvy lines of Drunkard’s Path are easy to master in this cheerful quilt. The repeated block resembles a Drunkard’s Path block, however Marilyn has used a needleturn appliqué method to sew the curved piece onto the background. The background fabric is a collection of black and grey prints on white; by mixing up the patterns it adds more movement and interest to the overall quilt. Each four-patch block features a different-coloured mottled fabric. The addition of various-sized circles adds some fun, as does the quilting stitches in Perle thread echoing them. This quilt is lap size. If you’d like it bigger, just make more blocks for a bed-sized quilt or increase the block size. Raw-edge appliqué would also work well in executing this pattern.
